Hangzhou Xiangji Temple Road West Extension Project

Release time:

2025-12-24

Abstract

High ecological and cultural preservation requirements: The tunnel passes beneath the World Heritage site section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, with the historic Doudou Road district located upstream nearby. The area also features culturally protected buildings such as the ancient Xiangji Temple Pagoda. During construction, measures were taken—including excavating at a depth of about 10 meters below the riverbed and reinforcing the Xiangji Temple Pagoda with ground-based supports—to both preserve the scenic beauty of the canal and ensure the safety of the protected cultural heritage sites. The construction presents significant technical challenges: This project marks Hangzhou’s first-ever shield tunneling operation using a large-diameter machine with an exceptionally small curve radius. The tunnel’s minimum curve radius is just 500 meters—far lower than the standard 600-meter curve radius typically seen in 11-meter-class shield machines. Moreover, the project requires closely passing alongside multiple buildings and dealing with the complex conditions of twin-tunnel shield driving under the canal, placing extremely high demands on the control of tunneling parameters.

Construction unit: China Railway Tunnel Bureau Group Co., Ltd.

Device Number: ("Canal Pioneer" Tunnel Boring Machine) China Railway Equipment

High ecological and cultural preservation requirements: The tunnel passes beneath the World Heritage site section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, adjacent upstream to the historic Doudou Road district, and surrounded by culturally protected buildings such as the ancient Xiangji Temple Pagoda. During construction, measures including excavation at a depth of about 10 meters below the riverbed and reinforcing the Xiangji Temple Pagoda with ground-based supports were implemented. These measures not only preserved the scenic beauty of the canal but also ensured the safety of the culturally protected structures. High technical difficulty: This project represents Hangzhou’s first-ever shield tunneling operation involving a large-diameter tunnel with an exceptionally small curve radius. The tunnel’s minimum curve radius is just 500 meters—far below the standard 600-meter curve radius typically seen in 11-meter-class tunnel boring machines. Moreover, the project requires closely passing alongside multiple buildings and dealing with the complex conditions of twin-tunnel shield driving under the canal, placing extremely high demands on the control of tunneling parameters.
