Wuhan Yangtze River Highway Tunnel

Release time:

Abstract

The geological conditions are complex: the tunnel needs to pass beneath a riverbed at a depth of 57 meters, where the water pressure is high, and through highly permeable silty fine sand layers as well as unevenly hard and soft rock formations. Addressing technical challenges such as high water pressure, strong permeability, extremely shallow burial, long-distance tunneling, and precise attitude control, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) completed a single-pass excavation of approximately 2.5 kilometers beneath the riverbed, setting a new record at the time for China’s longest tunnel excavated by TBM under complex geological conditions characterized by high water pressure. This tunnel is also the first under-river highway tunnel in China constructed using a TBM with a diameter exceeding 10 meters that has been successfully started and completed. Moreover, it is the first tunnel in China to have been fully excavated through a continuous sandy stratum.

Project Features:

The geological conditions are complex: the tunnel needs to pass beneath a riverbed at a depth of 57 meters under high water pressure, through highly permeable silty fine sand layers, and across rock formations with uneven hardness. Addressing technical challenges such as high water pressure, strong permeability, ultra-shallow burial, long-distance tunneling, and precise attitude control, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) completed a single-pass excavation of approximately 2.5 kilometers beneath the riverbed, setting a new record at the time for China’s longest tunnel excavated by TBM under complex geological conditions characterized by high water pressure. This tunnel is also the first under-river highway tunnel in China constructed using a TBM with a diameter exceeding 10 meters, and it was the very first tunnel in the country to be fully excavated through a continuous sandy stratum.
