Abstract

The 2,200-meter tunnel section using a shield machine needs to pass under several critical infrastructure facilities, including the Qiandao Lake water supply pipeline, the Hangzhou Ring Expressway, a high-pressure gas pipeline, and the subway express line tunnel. The northern tunnel runs within less than 10 meters horizontally from the airport express line and extends for a parallel distance of up to 1,200 meters. During construction, vibration and settlement isolation technologies were employed, ensuring that the settlement of the airport express line remained below 8 millimeters and thereby guaranteeing its safe operation.

Construction unit: China Railway Tunnel Bureau

Device Number: "Kaihuo" and "Fenjin"

Cutting disc diameter: 14.17 meters

Tunneling length: The total length of the entire project is approximately 4.06 kilometers, of which the tunnel section accounts for 3.87 kilometers. Among the core tunneling tasks undertaken by the two shield machines, the northern line tunnel has been excavated over a length of 1,328 meters, while the southern line tunnel has been excavated over a length of 1,344 meters. In the earlier planning stage, the designed lengths of the northern and southern tunnels were indicated as 2,220 meters and 2,209 meters, respectively. It is speculated that this discrepancy between the initial planning figures and the actual construction mileage reflects differences in the way distances were allocated during the early planning phase versus the actual construction phase.

Project Features:

The 2,200-meter tunnel section constructed by shield method needs to pass under several critical infrastructure facilities, including the Qiandao Lake water supply pipeline, the Hangzhou Ring Expressway, a high-pressure gas pipeline, and the subway express line tunnel. The northern tunnel runs less than 10 meters horizontally from the airport express line and has a parallel distance of up to 1,200 meters. During construction, vibration and settlement isolation technologies were employed, ensuring that the settlement of the airport express line remained below 8 millimeters and thereby guaranteeing its safe operation.

Innovative construction techniques minimize the impact on residents' livelihoods: We creatively shifted from “vertical transportation” to “horizontal transportation” in tunnel boring operations, reorganized the work sequence to “first on-ground, then in the tunnel,” and restored two-way six-lane traffic on the ground ahead of schedule, thereby reducing to the greatest extent possible the disruption to traffic along the route caused by construction. Moreover, the technique of using sleeve shafts combined with freezing methods to repair the cutterhead of the northern-line tunnel boring machine represents a first in China.
